Mental health involves our emotional, psychological and social well-being. Emotional health is about you being in control of your thought, feelings, and behavior. You are aware of your emotions and can effectively regulate it. in other words, you’re emotionally intelligent.

A few years ago when I was an employee working 9 – 5, my view of whom an entrepreneur was and should be was rather myopic or an erroneous view. I had a misguided idea that the entrepreneurial path was all enjoyment, being your own boss, having more money, having control of your time and every other thing you can think of…LOL.

But fast forward to the present time where I now lead my own company, I now understand that being an entrepreneur will place an enormous demand on your emotional and mental health stability.

It’s the beginning of a new year, as an entrepreneur, how can you ensure emotional and mental health stability throughout the year?

 1. Find purpose and meaning in life

What makes you happy? What activities bring your fulfillment? You may think of it as a way to feel needed, feel good about yourself, a purpose that drives you on, or simply a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

In biological terms, finding meaning and purpose is essential to brain health as it can help generate new cells and create new neural pathways in the brain. It can also strengthen your immune system, alleviate pain, relieve stress, and keep you motivated to pursue the other steps to improve mental and emotional health. Each day must have a purpose in view

 2. Spend time with people whose company you enjoy

You must deliberately hang out with people you love more often this year. Have lunch with your colleagues, or make plans to meet a friend you haven’t spent time within a while. When you spend time with people you love and get along with, it gives you a sense of being valued and appreciated.

You must find ways to spend quality time with someone in person  — this is important and it’s often better than using technology to connect with them. Having healthy relationships with your friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors can increase your sense of emotional wellbeing and give you a feeling of connectedness.

3. Keep your stress level in check

You will have certain triggers that cause you stress, just like everyone else. Sometimes, you can try to avoid a stressful situation, but when you don’t have a choice but to face the event or person that causes you to stress, you need to find a way to cope with it. “If you know you get stressed by your work, you must learn how to put work in perspective and not let work become a life-defining activity for you, because your work is something you will just have to face.

In some cases, avoiding stress-generating situations may work, but you must be able to differentiate between when you can avoid them and when you cannot. You must find strategies to manage your stress so that you can take better care of yourself. This could include talking to a friend, meditating, going for a walk, listening to music, and exercising, etc.

Stress takes a heavy toll on emotional and mental health, so it’s important to keep it under control. While not all stressors can be avoided, stress management strategies can help you brings things back into balance.

4. Stay Active

The reason you have to pay good attention to your physical health is that, when you improve your physical health, you may automatically experience greater emotional and mental well-being. Regular exercise can have a positive impact on emotional and mental health problems, relieve stress, improve memory, and help you to sleep better.

5. Take good care of yourself

A lot of entrepreneurs and leaders do not pay attention to themselves. They’re usually focused on taking care of other people to the detriment of their personal self-care. Investing time in self-care contributes positively to your emotional and mental health. Set time aside for yourself; attend to your own emotional needs; read a book; pamper yourself.

Practice mindfulness to relax and you can also use meditation which is a focused form of guided thought.  Other stress-reducing techniques include deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation. and If you’re unsure of how to get started, take a class and learn how to practice on your own for 30 minutes, three times a week.

And unless you’ve tried to change your diet in the past, you may not be aware of how much of what you eat—and don’t eat—affects the way you think and feel. An unhealthy diet can have a negative effect on your brain and mood, disrupt your sleep, sap your energy, and weaken your immune system.

And if you flip, switching to a balanced diet, low in sugar and rich in healthy fats, can give you more energy, improve your sleep and mood, and help you to look and feel your best.

7. Practice Gratitude

Our thoughts are powerful energies which invariably have a strong influence on our emotional and mental health. An important technique to effectively have control over your thoughts is to practice daily gratitude. It will help you overcome anxiety, worries, frustrations, disappointments, etc. And all you need to do for a start is to set aside 30 minutes within your day, find a quiet place, and think deeply about the things you’re grateful for in your life
